There are many causes leading to the change of the colour of a non-vital tooth (with no nerve). This happens because of dental trauma or root canal fillings. Whitening of these teeth involves the introduction of a bleaching substance inside the tooth, unlike the vital teeth whitening, where it is applied directly on the teeth. The substance used is based on peroxides that penetrate into the enamel micro-fissures and removes the residues that give the unpleasant colour to the tooth.

Whitening of non-vital teeth: Procedure

This treatment is performed in several sessions at the dentist’s. The first step is to perform tooth radiography in order to determine the cause of its colour change. If root canal treatment is incorrect, or if a dental trauma got complicated leading to tooth necrosis, the drug treatment of that tooth should be performed followed by the permanent root canal filing. A retroalveolar radiography is performed in order to verify the correctness of the canal filling, then the root obturation material in the cervical area is removed, then sealed with a glass-ionomer cement, the pulp chamber is cleaned and the bleach paste is applied within the pulp chamber. Heat is applied for 1-2 minutes; the substance is removed and applied once again. The procedure is repeated three times. The same thing should be done at the level of the vestibular side. At the end of the whitening process, the colour must be checked. A provisional filling material is applied and composite coronary restoration is performed 7-10 days later.

Walking Bleach

Another whitening technique for these teeth is “walking bleach”. The dentist performs all the steps described above, applying the bleach paste into the pulp chamber and closes the cavity with a temporary filling material. The substance is left in the cavity between 2-7 days. If the colour is not satisfactory, the process is repeated no more than 3 times. Then the whitening substance is removed and a temporary filling is applied for 7-10 days. After verifying the colour of the tooth, it is possible to perform the coronary filling with composite material.
