Dental implant

A dental implant is a metallic device that is inserted into the alveolar bone thickness in order to replace the root of a missing natural tooth. The dental implant is the treatment recommended for tooth loss and it can provide a support for the entire or partial teeth.

This procedure is part of the category of dental prosthesis procedures, but it can also be included in dental aesthetics field.

The dental implant can be inserted immediately after the extraction of the ”problematic” tooth or after the extraction site has been cured by a surgical procedure performed by the specialist doctor. Once accepted, the implant takes over the function of the dental root. Acceptance of the implant involves the formation and strengthening of the bond between the implant surface and the bone tissue. After a certain period of time necessary for integration into the bone, the following component is attached to the implant, namely the prosthetic abutment. Once the implant replaces the tooth root, the dentist can cement the prosthetic crown, the bridge or prosthesis that will replace the natural tooth/teeth.

What dental implants can we use?

There are many types of dental implants designed by different brands, but each of us will use the type of implant that best suits our need, an implant recommended by a medical specialist. Here’s a classification of dental implants, a classification that will help us understand how these devices work and make a choice, in order to get the best and desired result. Implants can be:

  • Endosseous implants that are inserted into the thickness of the maxillary bones;
  • The subperiosteal implant consists in inserting a metal frame into the maxillary bone beneath the gingival tissue.
  • The intraosseous implant consists in inserting a piece of titanium into the jaw bone. It is the most frequently used type of dental implant.
  • Submucous implant.

Is it a painful procedure?

For this intervention local anaesthetic (injectable) is used so you will not feel any pain but only a little discomfort, some kind of pressure during the surgical procedure. Complementarily inhalosedation can be administered for increased comfort.

After the anaesthetic effect disappears, each patient will feel the surgical intervention differently, depending on the individual pain tolerance and the number of implants inserted. After this procedure, the gums will be more sensitive, swollen and you will feel mild pain at the jaw or mandible level.

Pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs, are prescribed immediately after the surgical procedure. In some situations, a 7-day treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs is also prescribed.

The ideal candidate

Health is a factor much more important than age, and if you are healthy enough to get your tooth extracted, you are probably healthy enough to undergo a dental implant.

This surgical procedure may be contraindicated for certain chronic diseases (insulin-dependent diabetes, leukemia, polyarticular rheumatism, severe heart disease, liver, kidney, spleen disorders), in case of infections such as syphilis, TB, AIDS, actinomycosis as they may have poor response to surgical lesions healing, in case of diseases of the bone system because there is a too high risk for the implant to fail because of poor osteointegration.

Furthermore, this procedure is not indicated in patients who have undergone treatment affecting general-status (irradiation, cytostatic treatment, corticoid therapy, long-term treatment of anticoagulants), in case of maxillary or mandibular cancer. There are also temporary local contraindications that are given by cold sores, odontal injuries (untreated caries), periodontal lesions, maxillary sinusitis, poor oral hygiene, root debris included in the bone.

Implantological surgery is contraindicated in pregnant women because it may require the administration of some drugs that cause complications in pregnancy.

Our specialist doctors will determine whether you are fit or not for dental implants, after careful analysis of all specific tests (blood tests, special radiographies) as well as your dental history.

The success rate of a dental implant depends to a large extent on the hygiene of the oral cavity. The persons who are more negligent in this respect should not resort to it.

Shall we pay little or shall we prefer quality when we want good results?

The price of a dental implant is influenced by many factors that do not always depend on the dental practitioner or ourselves. After a first consultation, the dentist can estimate a price, but after a thorough consultation and after the analysis of special radiography, the price of an implant may change because unpredictable situations may occur, such as bone addition (when the natural bone is inadequately inserted on the artificial bone), sinus lift (the bone addition into the maxillary sinus), odontal lesions (when we have untreated caries the insertion of dental implants will be postponed until these dental problems are solved). These unpredicted situations can significantly change the price of a dental implant, that’s why it is advisable to see your dentist, ask for all information about this procedure, and establish a treatment plan together.

The brand that designs the dental implant and the specialist doctor who performs this procedure represent the essential factors when talking about the price. The quality and safety of the implant are extremely important for success, the resistance and especially the longevity of the new “artificial” tooth.

Our clinic works with the number one brand in dental implants in the world, STRAUMANN Group in Switzerland. The first dental implants were developed by the Straumann Institute in 1974, and at present time Straumann dental implants are manufactured in Europe and the USA. The price of a Straumann dental implant may vary depending on the need of each of us.

ArtisticDent Clinic offers a wide range of Straumann dental implants, the price being calculated based on the type of implant used. Our implantologist is the mentor of Straumann implant in Romania.
